Marine Corps supports Connecticut High School Coaches
The CHSCA is pleased to announce their partnership with the United States Marine Corps. What follows is their official press release.
HARTFORD, Ct. - The Marines of Marine Corps Recruiting Station Springfield, Mass., have recently partnered with the Connecticut High School Coaches Association to help support local high school coaches and athletes in Connecticut.
The Marines have always held themselves to the highest standards of honor, courage and commitment. In fact, these values are the building blocks at Marine Corps Recruit Training, but anyone could benefit from these standards.
Throughout its existence the Marine Corps has supported its local community, and this recent partnership with the CHSCA couldn't be a better fit. Both organizations seek to support local coaches and recognize their outstanding efforts with today's youth, as well as promote the high standards of education, health and competition that high school athletics requires.
To show their support, the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon stationed in Washington, D.C., has also volunteered to come and honor the coaches and their players, by performing at half-time during the 10th Annual Governor's Cup on June 28.
The Marine Corps would like to congratulate each of the coaches for their outstanding success and commitment to their teams. We will be proud to support you and your students at the Governor's Cup, and throughout the upcoming season.

Dear Head Coach / Athletic Director:
Starting in the school year 2006-07, it is mandatory for all varsity head coaches to be a member of the CHSCA. All head coaches must have a continuous membership or lose the options available to all member coaches in the state of Connecticut.
The Connecticut High School Coaches Association after many years of deliberation has finally decided to follow all the other states in our country by making it mandatory for all varsity head sports coaches to belong to the CHSCA. In the past, we have allowed a coach that was not one of our members to be honored with a major CHSCA award such as the CHSCA Hall of Fame or allowing a nonmember coach to vote on a rule change that would affect CHSCA member teams. These are examples of the Will Not be Able to sheet that will immediately impact all head coaches in the state of Connecticut.
It is our hope that each sport committee will have on a CD the name, address, school, home phone number, e-mail address, etc of each head coach. This will enhance our communication within each sport.
Sincerely,
John J. Fontana, Executive Director, CHSCA
Gary Makowicki , Treasurer, CHSCA

| | Craig Breslow and the Strike 3 Foundation | | | The Strike 3 Foundation is a charitable agency that heightens awareness, mobilizes support, and raises funding for childhood cancer research.
Founded in 2008 by MLB pitcher Craig Breslow, the tenets of the Strike 3 Foundation had been in place for some time. At age 14, Craig’s sister was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. More than fifteen years later, she lives an unrestricted life as a cancer survivor.
Unequivocally, this success story is attributed to advancements in pediatric oncology treatment and research funded largely through generous donations and charitable efforts.

This August at Southington High School during the 2010 All Sport Clinic this module will be offered along with other coaching education modules and sports topics. The Bureau of Education Standards and Certification will be monitoring compliance on this new regulation.

| | CHSCA Meritorious Service Award for 2009 | | | The first recipient for the Meritorious Service award is MARY WOLLENBERG. The purpose of this award is to honor a high school coach who has provided exemplary guidance to their student athletes.
Mary was one of the true pioneers in women’s sports in Connecticut. For thirty-five years, she coached field hockey, first at Terryville High School then at Watertown High School. She also coached softball for twenty-four years in both towns.
Mary attended the University of Maine where she earned her Bachelor’s degree, and participated in field hockey. Mary played goalie in the early stages of field hockey at Maine. She later taught as a physical education teacher in Terryville and Watertown.
Mary was the driving force behind and the first chairperson of the All State Selection Committee starting in the late 1970’s. She has also worked on committees for All Star Games and Nutmegs and is currently Chairperson of the All State Banquet.
Mary has received several awards. She is in the Northeast: New Agenda Hall of Fame, the prestigious Watertown-Oakville Gold Circle of Sports, and in 1991, she was recognized by her peers as Coach of the Year.
Mary has had a lasting effect on a huge number of students and athletes. Her successor as field hockey coach in Watertown, instituted the “Mary Wollenberg Award” which is given to the senior player who shows the most dedication to field hockey.
The CHSCA is proud to recognize Mary Wollenberg as the 2009 Meritorious Service award recipient.

[more] | | John Fontana- Recipient of the Distinguished Service Award Outside the Field of Athletic Administration from CAAD | | | Congratulations to John Fontana on this recognition from the Connecticut Association of Athletic Directors at their 26th Annual Awards Banquet held on March 25th at the Rocky Hill Marriott. This award recognizes John Fontana’s work as the Executive Director of the CHSCA and his concerted efforts to improve interscholastic athletics in Connecticut. As stated in the CAAD Awards night program, “a review of his resume reveals a far reaching influence he has had on high school athletics as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor and leader of the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.” The CHSCA would like to thank the CAAD Executive Board and their director Fred Balsamo for their hospitality and generosity during the banquet. | | CHSCA Membership Insurance Information | | | CHSCA Membership insurance information is posted in the Coaches' Info section. | | Establishing a Tradition of Sportsmanship by Tom Murray | | | There was a time, long ago, when most high school sports teams functioned without trained coaches. High school students organized their own practices, trained, developed and implemented strategies and competed with only an elected teammate-captain to direct them. Schools provided an adult manager, usually a faculty member, who made arrangements for games and supervised the athletes. The manager’s role was minimal except for the important function of promoting the health and safety of athletes and assuring that high standards of ethical sportsmanship were observed. [more] | | Revisiting Coaching Ethics by Tom Murray | | | With coaches about to enter a new athletic season, it might be a good time for coaches to review the CHSCA Coaches Code of Ethics. Every coach knows that even the most talented athlete or team can always find areas to target for improvement. The same can be said of coaches' performances.
Take a few minutes to read the CHSCA Coaches Code of Ethics and consider making an item or two, points of emphasis for this year.
Coaches are role models for their athletes. Redoubling our efforts to function within the precepts of our Code of Ethics can do more good than just talking about sportsmanship.
Coaches know that actions speak louder than words. Here's a great way to set an example that your athletes will emulate. You might even want to post the Code as a statement of your expectations for your performance as a coach.
