CHSCA Player of the Year: Evan Felcher, Staples

Discussion:* Our annual state tournaments experienced very few problems due in large part to

great planning and seeding; outstanding behavior of players; high quality site directors and a

beneficent Mother Nature. Whereas the players by-in-large behaved admirably, we did have an

encounter between coaches in the LL (Norwalk and Staples) that may result in CIAC action and

an invitation to attend our fall meeting. The Class Tournament finals held at Conard High

School went off basically without a hitch, although an umpires appropriate call did end the last

match, a LL singles final.

Umpires are needed in our tournament, and we may want to explore

using them during semi-final matches in both the Class tournaments and the State Open when

all players are in one location. The sites of Hall, Conard and Yale worked out fine, and I

received overwhelmingly positive feedback from girls and boys finalists that enjoyed the

privilege of playing the State Open on Stadium court at the CT Tennis Center. Wesleyan

University Courts (12) may be available next spring, so that is something worth considering.

Amity High School, the site of our opening rounds of the State Open, is also centrally located

and is reconfiguring and resurfacing their 8 courts.

The only other problem we can easily fix is some of the language about non-qualifying teams

has to be tightened, especially the rule that determines how many a NQ team may send.

Periodically I receive inquiries about our format (individual vs team), and the only other requests

I have heard with some frequency are to allow players additional outside tournament

opportunities during the season and to create a drop down box to report individual scores.

Finally we have discussed in the past whether we should require teams to send #1s and #2s

from their teams in singles, and have tabled that discussion for, perhaps, our fall meeting.

A thought worth exploring: during the season I became aware of a service called UTR

(Universal Tennis Rating) that has become a standard rating and recruitment tool for all tennis

players, regardless of age or gender. Our tournament may be able to link into the network

which would allow for our matches to be recorded for the players cumulative ratings. If that is

possible, this may help us attract all talented junior players to high school and, subsequently,

State Tournament play because it will serve the dual benefit of playing for a high school team

without losing out on opportunities to gain advancement in the players UTR rating. I will report

on this at our fall meeting.

Once again, thank you to everyone that helps to make our Tournament Season such a

success.

2016 Runner-Up in Class LL elected not to play in the State T
