To Cheer Coaches, Dance Coaches and Athletic Directors

It has come to our attention that the record industry is now enforcing copyright laws for the music used in cheerleading and dance routines. Listed below is the USA Cheer announcement about the new music requirements for cheer and dance teams. We will be enforcing the recommendation of USA Cheer.  In order to comply with the music requirement, teams would need to obtain their music from a preferred provider.  We have also included the link for licensed providers.  These providers will issue a license to the team to use the music.  Please obtain and keep copies of the license to present at any competition that you do enter.

When our DJ Chad from Boppers was asked what he knew about this new music requirement, he responded with the following:

This is a new thing that is going around and it's all over. This is what I was able to find out, I am not a lawyer but I did do a lot of research and talked to a few people who have been in the business even longer than me.

1) A lot of the music that is being ripped and used for the teams are being purchased from a 3rd party. This party should have  LICENCES in order to do so. If not, they shouldn't be selling remixes and using the artist's music without permission. These should be professional studios and they shouldn't have a problem doing so as they pay for it and do it all the time. Too many people don't pay for their music and rip it off you tube and other services and then resell it.

How does it affect your comps I do not know, I would tell all the coaches moving forward  to buy the music from the studios and people who are able to do so and not from "Friends" or allowing the "Coaches" to make the music anymore. Somebody has to pay for the music somewhere. I am sure it's not cheap but it should cover yourself and your competitions.  I find it sad that music industry is so desperate for a money grab that they are going after these competitions.

If you have any questions about these copyright laws you are free to contact an attorney.

Information and Requirements

The Connecticut High School Coaches Association will select an All State Cheerleading Team in each of the following Classes: LL, L, M and S. Twenty (20) cheerleaders will be selected in each division.  The divisions will be determined by the Connecticut Association of Schools as set forth for the State Cheerleading Competition.  Any Coed team would move into the appropriate division for their school enrollment.  In order for a cheerleader to try-out for the All State Cheerleading Team the Head Varsity Cheerleading Coach must first complete the nomination form (see attached form) and the form must be signed by either the Athletic Director or Principal.

Cheerleaders must be in grades 9 – 12 and must be a member of the varsity cheerleading team and in good standing with their school. They must be on a roster for their school’s cheer team for either the fall or winter season and have cheered for a fall or winter sport.

Nominations must be postmarked no later than January 6, 2017.

Nominations will not be accepted after this date regardless of the circumstances.

Nominations are to be sent to:

Beth Sarnacki

274 Liberty Street, Meriden, CT 06450

You may also submit your nominations by email

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Once you submit your nominations they cannot be changed. However, in the event that acheerleader is no longer a member of their cheer team or did not complete the season due to an infraction they can be suspended from consideration for the All State cheer team by the Varsity Head Coach, Athletic Director or Principal. Notification must be made to Beth Sarnacki in writing prior to the announcement of the AllState Teams.

Requirements to be included on the Cd/DVD which must be postmarked by February 3, 2017:

CD/DVDS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE DEADLINE REGAURDLESS OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES.

the CD/DVD CAN NOT INCLUDE ANY mention the school OR MASCOT AND MUST FOLLOW THIS FORMAT:

1. IntroductionThe cheerleader trying out is to state her/his name only, not her/his school or grade. She/he should be in shorts and tee shirt.  The shorts and tee shirt will not have any logos or sayings from the school that she/he is from. We highly suggest a plain white tee shirt and dark shorts. Failure to comply with this will result in a deduction from the total score.

2. Cheer:  Motions only, no jumps or incorporation are allowed in the cheer. A cheerleader may begin with the words ready - ok or clap 1,2,3,4 but they can not do motions other than clapping or cleaning their arms to their side as an introduction to the cheer. They can not add, change or omit any of the words as listed. Failure to follow the instructions will result in a deduction from the total score.

Words to Cheer:

We are the Patriots

Ready to Fight

Everybody up in the Stands

Yell red, blue and white

Red, blue and white

DO NOT ADD, CHANGE OR OMIT WORDS. YOU MAY ADD PAUSES OR CLAPS.

Remember: CHEER IS STRICTLY MOTIONS.

3. Jumps:  A level toe touch is mandatory and 1 other advanced single jump of their choice. Do not combine jumps. No double jumps are allowed. Failure to follow the instructions will result in a deduction from the total score.

4. Stunting:  Each cheerleader is to do a minimum of three stunts and a maximum of five. Members of the stunt group should be in a different shirt color than the cheerleader trying out. Body positions will be counted. If a skill is performed to a load position it will be counted as one stunt (ex.: a full up to load position - one stunt, a kick single - one stunt). Dismounts are not counted as a stunt but will be judged for execution. The stunt must be shown from beginning to end and all parts of the body of the nominee must be seen on the CD/DVD. For stunting, up to 2 bases may be used with one back spot and one flyer.  The exception is for a basket toss which may consist of a flyer, two bases, a back spot and a front spot. Failure to follow the instructions will result in a deduction from the total score.

Cheerleaders will be required to perform TWO OUT OF THE FOLLOWING THREE categories:

5. Standing Tumbling: The cheerleader can do a maximum of four standing tumbling skills.  Failure to follow the instructions will result in a deduction from the total score.

6. Running Tumbling: The cheerleader can do a maximum of six running tumbling skills

For example a round off, back handspring, back tuck would be considered three skills. Failure to follow the instructions will result in a deduction from the total score.

7. Dance: maximum of 30 seconds of music (music selection is the choice of the cheerleader and will not be provided) and no tumbling or jumps

All reuired categories must be completed or the cheerleader will receive a score of 0 for that category

All National Federation High School Spirit Rules must be adhered to during the tryout. This includes requirements for hair (all hair must be off the shoulders, not half up and half down) and jewelry.

NO PART OF THE TRYOUT CAN BE ON A SPRING FLOOR.

Penalties will be assessed for any Federation rule violation or not adhering to the directions in this packet.

When recording the tryout, please start and stop the camera between tryout requirements, letting the camera run for about ten seconds in between each requirement. CAUTION:  Before you stop the camera, let it run for a few seconds more. If you don’t, you may accidentally record over your previous requirement as some video cameras “rewind” when stopped.

Finally, Coaches test your nominees’ CD/DVD before you mail it. Be sure that it plays on a DVD player and/or a computer. If we can not view the CD/DVD then the cheerleader can not be scored.

Entries MUST be postmarked by February 3, 2017 and SENT to:

JOANN TATARYCKI, ATHLETIC SECRETARY, DANBURY HIGH SCHOOL,

43 CLAPBOARD RIDGE RD, DANBURY, CT 06811

Entries will not be accepted after the deadline regardless of the circumstances.

Entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges from Class S, Class M, Class L and Class LL.

All selections by the judges are FINAL.

Due 2/3/17

Dear Cheerleading Coach,

Greetings from the Cheerleading Committee of the Connecticut High School Coaches Association. We hope that everyone is having a good year. The Connecticut High School Coaches Association will select All State Cheerleaders for the 15th consecutive year. Four (4) All State Cheerleading Teams consisting of 20 athletes will be selected: one for each Class; LL, L, M and S.

We know there are many demands placed on all of us, but we need your help.   We are looking for a pool of cheerleading coaches who are willing to judge the All State entries.  We will select four coaches from each Class to select the All State teams.  All coaches who judge must be members of CHSCA.  There will be a head judge who will oversee the judging process and three panel judges that will judge the cheerleaders. For example, if you are a coach for a Class M school you would be judging the cheerleaders for either Class S, L or LL team. You would not judge your own division.  There will also be a tabulator and an assistant for each division.  In addition we would also need a tabulator for each room as well as a helper to assist with putting the cds/dvds into the computer.

The committee is hoping to judge the CD/DVD’s on Sunday, February 12, 2017 (snow date 2/19/17) beginning at 10:30 am at Cromwell HS. If you are interested in being in this pool please fill out the information sheet and send it back to Beth Sarnacki (address is listed on the information sheet) along with a copy of your CHSCA card by January 6, 2017. Once the sheets are returned a confirmation will be sent to you if you have been selected to be one of the judges. Please take the time to fill out the attached sheet and send it back if you would like to be considered. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

We, as a committee, felt that it was important to promote cheerleading in a safe and honorable manner.

As representatives of the sport, we modified the scoresheets so that all athletes could have the opportunity to

participate and work on their skills in order to become the best cheerleaders they can be. The committee felt

that by having such heavy weights on certain categories, cheerleaders were not being trained correctly, were

being pushed to injury, and were being asked to sit out due to their inability to perform said skills. As a fair and

balanced state who represents all athletes, the committee felt the need to create a scoresheet that promoted the

growth and participation of ALL athletes.

The scoresheet committee worked together using examples from New England’s scoresheets, the survey

results (44 coaches responded and 18 judges responded) that were sent to judges and coaches all around the

state, and had representatives from the judges panels and coaches in order to create a fair and balanced approach

to the new scoresheets.

Scoresheets 1 and 5

Motions, Transitions and Voice TO Motions, Dance, and Choreography

1) The committee felt that motions, dance and choreography fit better together and needed to be on one

scoresheet.

2) New England’s scoresheets weighed more on choreography and dance than ours did. We included more

ranges for creativity and visual effects in order to promote this.

3) There is no longer 8+ motions required

4) We removed required number of 8 counts for dance.

Scoresheets 2 and 6

Partner Stunt and Pyramids TO Partner Stunts and Expression/Voice

1) The committee felt that having pyramids and partner stunts together was a very large scoresheet and did not

allow the judge to accurately judge when there were pyramids and stunts going up at the same time.

2) Coed Teams

1) In order to be considered coed and scored accordingly: Athletes are expected to perform single based

stunts, independent of a pyramid sequence. A team not fulfilling this requirement will be dropped a

range.

Scoresheets 3 and 7

Tumbling and Jumps TO Tumbling and Jumps

1) The committee felt that these two should stay together

2) Scoresheet has been simplified to follow New England’s and to allow growth in tumbling for teams in order

to practice and perfect their skills.

3) Handsprings has been moved to another level and forward rolls, cartwheels, roundoff, and walkovers are in

a level of their own to allow for scoring at the beginners level.

4) The matrix has been eliminated in order to allow for easy understanding for both the coaches and athletes.

5) Jumps combined with tumbling will increase difficulty in tumbling and score higher within range instead of

the counting under jumps separately.

6) Specialty pass has been defined more precisely and will be scored higher in running tumbling difficulty

category

Scoresheets 4 and 8

Dance, Formation, and Choreography TO Pyramids and Formations and Transitions

1) The committee felt that pyramids do not happen as often as formations, spacing, and transitions. We wanted

the judge to be able to concentrate on the pyramid, and then be free to watch the rest of the routine for flow

of transitions, formations, etc.

Deductions

1) What constitutes a tumbling bobble vs fall?

1) Fall = Both hands and knees landing on the ground at the same time landing with body weight on the

ground and/or body is horizontal

2) Bobble = A balance check with hands OR knees

2) The deduction judge has full discretion as to whether they will use the diagram or mark bobbles and falls

with times and place on the grid. There is no expectation that they all do it the same.

Overall Changes

1) Each scoresheet allows for an even 25 points. The committee felt very strongly about this and worked very

hard to correct and make this happen. All elements of the routine are important and the committee wanted

this to be reflected on the scoresheets.

2) The committee felt that teams that could not perform advanced tumbling skills should still have a chance

and earn points. We are representing all of CT cheerleading and efforts should be rewarding, even if small.

We want teams to keep working on skill and improving, not give up and feel that they will never reach that

goal.
