Fall Softball Report – 2017

Senior All-Star Softball Games: June 12, 2017

On Monday, June 12, 2017 the CHSCA Softball Committee held the 35th annual Senior All-Star games. Sponsors for these games were Diamond, FastPitch Dynamics, and USA Elite Training. These games were contests between two S/M teams (Blue and White), comprising 33 players and two L/LL teams (East and West), comprising 40 players. In total 56 school were represented on the teams. Because of the geographical saturation from the western side of the state, the S/M teams were not broken into teams of east and west as they had been in previous years. The S/M teams were coached by Andrew Walker of Waterford High School and Gary Hovhanessian of St. Paul Catholic. The L/LL teams were coached by Karen Costes of Glastonbury High School and Tom Pia of Westhill High School.

From these games on June 12th, 16 players were selected to play in an All-Star game versus the Stratford Brakettes on Thursday June 15th at Deluca Field. This game was coached by Karen Costes.

Both events were successful endeavors. To date 15 coaches have not sent in payment for their players.

Respectfully Submitted,

Bryan Burdick, NFA

Annual Report to the executive board meeting for the CHSCA submitted by Junior Select Chairperson Kevin Wesche – Naugatuck High School

The 9th ANNUAL CHSCA JUNIOR SELECT COLLEGE SHOWCASE SOFTBALL GAME – took place on June 13, 2017 (no RAIN!!!).  The location for the games was the Dunn Athletic Sports Complex located at 400 Thorpe Avenue, Meriden, CT 06450. We wish to send our gratitude to Head Softball Coach Scott Aresco of Maloney High School and his staff for securing the fields for this event.  They were played at 5 and 7 PM with the S/M East vs. the S/M West at 5 and the L/LL East vs. the L/LL West at 7.  The game format was an 8 inning contest allowing for identical opportunities and innings played by all team participants for equal exposure in front of college coaches and fans.  Head coaches were selected from volunteers and they in turn chose another coach to assist them for game day preparation and managing the event from the dugouts.

Jen Hapanovich from USA Elite Training provided game shirts for all players. A College Resume was set up for participants to fill out that was organized into a college coach’s handout.  Some 350 plus Colleges and Universities were invited to come and watch the future of Connecticut softball during the game. Approximately 21 coaches were identified as attending from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The selection process was by nomination forms filled out by the player’s coaches and received by the selection committee.

The 2017 Junior Select Game used an on-line form through Google Docs to be filled out by the coaches for an easier nomination process. This format allowed the committee to better sort out the nominations by criteria that made the participants deserving of the award. Coaches were able to access the online form from May 6th through May 20th 2017.

From there the committees evaluated the candidate’s credentials and chose the best players to showcase their talents. With 4 teams available and up to 20 per roster, this enabled some 80 young ladies to participate in this annual event.

Each school was required to sell/purchase 10 tickets per player at $6 each to offset cost associated with CHSCA events and games. The games received positive reviews from participants, coaches, friends, and family as well as college coaches in attendance

FASTPITCH ONLINE SHOWCASE and Kim Gwydir and USA ELITE TRAINING – Jen Hapanovich -Professional Softball Instruction are to be commended for their continued support along with the Diamond Softballs.

Respectfully submitted,

Kevin Wesche - Junior Select College Showcase Chair
Naugatuck High School Varsity Softball Coach

Softball Assistant Coach of the Year

Jaymie Sommers-Cheshire HS

To Whom It May Concern,

It is an honor to recommend Jaymie Sommers for this years Assistant Coach of the Year. I have known Jaymie for 9 years.  She was my player at UMass Lowell before graduating from college and coming on staff as my assistant.  Jaymie has dedicated her life to her passion for softball, giving back to the game and mentoring young softball players.

Coach Jay is dedicated to Cheshire Softball year round. She not only meets with the team 3 days a week in the off season to lift and train but she wrote each program for each individual and their needs.

She is currently the Softball Coordinator at Core training academy in Orange, Connecticut. She dedicates her time everyday of the year to helping grow this sport and mentor young players path in the game and in life.

For our team, Coach Jay is our hidden secret. She without a doubt could hold a head coaching job somewhere. She has dedicated her time to this program and to our girls.  I have no doubt, that if unable to attend, that coach Jay would guide the team with the same knowledge and leadership as I would.  She is on a constant mission to seek out more knowledge of the game and ways to help grow this sport.  Jaymie, everyday, is in search of ways to help our team get better.  She always has time…even on her busiest days….she has time.  She does work in the morning, then goes to practice, then runs to work.  She is non-stop for this sport and all the people involved.

Prior to working at Core Training Academy, Jaymie was a trainer at ASD fitness center full time. ASD fitness services all kids on the spectrum and other disabilities.  She still currently volunteers once a week to help like children in the New Haven School System.

Prior to her work at ASD she also worked as a summer camp servicing children with special needs.

Her warm heart, never altering hard work, knowledge for this game and level of leadership skills makes Jaymie Sommers the ultimate role model for a coach and how coaching should be done.

I, my team, our program and our school are lucky to have her. The sport is lucky to have her…and I am lucky to call her my best friend.

Sincerely,

Kristine Botto Drust
