| The Connecticut Coaching Education Program Offers New CEU Modules |

Members: Please note this important update concerning the Connecticut Coaching Education Program regarding CEU Modules.
The CCEP is offering a brand new 3 hour Module dealing with Concussions and Neck Injuries that will be held at the Windsor Marriott on February 4, 2010 from 5-8pm.
There is a new online CEU Module worth 3 hours. Module 6 titled Revocation, Harassment & Hazing is now available online.

| 2009 CHSCA Hall of Fame |

Eight coaches and one media member will be inducted into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Nov. 19, 2009. The inductions will be held at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington starting at 7pm. Tickets for the dinner are available from the CHSCA office at P.O. Box 632, Southington 06487, by calling 860-628-4122 or by e-mailing John Fontana at jfontana01@snet.net.

The CHSCA congratulates Dave Strong of Masuk (Monroe) and Irv Black of New Britain on their induction into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame this past June at the annual national convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Irving Black is a coaching legend in cross country and track and field. In addition to his CHSCA COTY in cross country in 1965, Mr. Black was inducted into the CHSCA Hall of Fame in 1995. The National Federation of High Schools placed him into their Hall of Fame in 2006. Coach Black operates the Northeast Timing Services Company and is still a fixture at athletic events in Connecticut.
Dave Strong, Masuk's girls basketball coach, has received multiple honors for his coaching excellence over the years. He received the 1982 CHSCA COTY and was awarded the NHSACA COTY in 2002. He is a member of the CHSCA Hall of Fame as well of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. Dave is also a Past President of the CHSCA.
Jim Cotter, softball coach at NFA, was awarded the NHSACA Coach of the Year for 2009. Jim was the 2005 CHSCA COTY. Congratulations Jim from the CHSCA for this oustanding recognition.

| 45th CHSCA Recognition Dinner May 14, 2009 |

The Connecticut High School Coaches Association will honor 26 of its members as Outstanding Coaches of the Year at its 45th annual recognition dinner May 14, 2009 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.
The CHSCA also will recognize Mark Logan of RHAM with the Thomas R. Monahan CHSCA Honor Award, Aqua Turf proprietor Joseph Calvanese with the Joseph J. Fontana Distinguished Service Award, Raymond "Chip" Salvestrini of Danbury as the athletic director of the year and Jerry Horowitz of the NFL with the Joseph Calvanese Sponsorship Award.
The dinner will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40. Special seating arrangements are being set up for each school to accommodate 10 per table. Checks should be made out to: Connecticut High School Coaches Association and sent to John Fontana, P.O. Box 632, Southington, CT 06490. For additional information, contact Fontana at 860-628-4122.

On November 20th, 2008 at the Aqua Turf Club-Southington the 2008 class of the CHSCA Hall of Fame will be honored.
The inductees are Len Corto (South Catholic-Hartford and New Britain), Gary Makowicki (Norwich Free Academy), George Baldwin (Middletown), Mike Bontatibus (Cheshire), Pam Childs (Putnam), Abe Breslow (Trumbull) and George Albano of the Norwalk Hour.

| The Rob Szymaszek Courageous American Award |

At its February meeting, the Executive Committee of the Connecticut High School Coaches Association approved the Rob Szymaszek Courageous American Award. The goal of the award is to recognize members of the interscholastic athletics community who have demonstrated unusual courage, persistence and grace in living with overwhelming personal challenges and have inspired others by their example. The award will be presented each year at the CHSCA Hall of Fame Dinner in November to male and female coaches, athletic directors and athletes who exemplify the positive, “Life is Good” philosophy that characterized the life of Rob Szymasek, the late Maloney High School football coach and CHSCA Past President.
CHSCA coaches, athletic directors and high school athletes are eligible for this award.
Nominations will be accepted from members of the CHSCA and must be accompanied with a narrative that supports why the nomination is appropriate.
Nominations are to be sent to John Fontana, P.O. Box 632, Southington, CT 06489. The deadline is June 1, 2008.
The final selections for the award will be made by the Ron Szymaszek Courageous American Committee which is composed of five members of the CHSCA Executive Committee.
